6 positive affirmations for health & fitness

It is the nature of life that we have good days and bad days. On good days everything works perfectly and we can speed through everything we need to do. Those are the days when a workout or fitness session is a joy and we need no extra persuasion.

That’s great – but what about the less good days? The rainy days, the ‘it’s all going wrong!’ days, the ‘stop the world, I want to get off’ days. These are the days when we really need some positive affirmations - reminders to look after ourselves, keep moving and enjoy the right food. Positive affirmations will keep you motivated when you need it most.

You may have come across affirmations if you do yoga classes, where they are often part of the calming atmosphere of the workout. The idea is translating to all areas of fitness.

For example, take a closer look at the pictures on the walls of your gym. Even without words, the scenes and images used will be designed to encourage you and motivate you. The gym wants you to keep coming back. So why not take a tip from them and bring some motivation home?

Where should affirmations go?

You want the affirmations to inspire, not annoy – so put them where you’ll see them as brief glimpses. Places such as by the front door, over the washing machine or above the kettle are all good. If you work in an office, a small sign or a screensaver there can also help to encourage lunchtimes to be spent in the gym rather than the pub.

Give me some examples

Affirmative means positive! Reminders such as ‘fridge pickers wear bigger knickers’ may amuse, but that is a negative. We want positives for encouragement, so try some of these:

I have a little book of these which I keep by my bedside table, occasionally read in the morning if I need a feel-good booster when I wake up!

I love the 'Do it now before later becomes never' quote. That could be so helpful for me. Am printing it out right now!

the 'thought for the day' works on radio 4, so why not for fitness? Mine will be British-style, though.. :-)
