CAN 3D PRINTING CHANGE THE WORLD OF FITNESS AND SPORTS GEAR?

CAN 3D PRINTING CHANGE THE WORLD OF FITNESS AND SPORTS GEAR?

Making an object materialise from air has always seemed to be something straight out of science-fiction. Not any more - the development of the 3D printer has brought this idea into the real world.

Given the right materials and a fair bit of patience, all sorts of things can now appear on a 3D printer. As with all new technology, things don’t always go to plan. However there are plenty of ways that we can already use 3D printing, and many more to follow.

It is not surprising that the gadget-loving world of fitness has leapt on this opportunity to make bespoke products.  How could 3D printing add to your fitness fun?

EARPHONES THAT STAY IN

Many of us find workouts much more fun with music, but it gets annoying when your earbuds fall out minutes into the session. Wrong-sized earbuds are also uncomfortable, and can encourage you to turn up the volume to dangerous levels.

3D printed customised earbuds solve all these problems. All you have to do is use a smartphone app to take a scan of your ears, and several companies will now produce personalised earbuds. The future of personal music is here!

FITNESS KIT THAT REALLY FITS

Wouldn’t it be great if you could have custom-fit workout gear at an affordable price? How about a perfectly shaped bike without a plutocrat’s salary?

The idea of producing perfectly fitting clothes from 3D printers is just beginning to take off. At the moment the available items are limited, but with the speed of development lots more should be coming soon.

SHOES THAT HELP YOUR FEET

Wearing the right shoes for your workout or sport really does matter. This is especially important for runners, who can do real damage with the wrong shoes. Those with gait problems or other health issues may find that customised insoles make all the difference. 3D printed insoles are already available as prototypes in America and the idea is spreading. The whole shoe could even be 3D printed soon.

Some think that 3D printing is the next major fitness technology, although there is still a way to go. It will be very interesting to see what materialises!

once this tech really works the applications are enormous. At the moment, as mentioned in the article, it is still a bit touch and go. Some of those 3d printer fails are rather artistic!

This sounds so unbelievable yet obviously it isn't - these companies are already doing it. Earphones sound great to me.

You would hopefully be able to personalise a lot of your fitness equipment which, for someone with earphones that fall out a lot, would be brilliant. Bring it on!

I didn't believe 3D printing was true when I first heard about it. Now it looks like it will be happening, it's so exciting, but I bet it would be so expensive.

This would be great and unbelievable that it's so close to actually happenning. A new pair of earbuds would be great right now, and save me driving to the shopping centre!
