Inspired to ski?

Has the Winter Olympics got you thinking about the slopes? Fancy charging down a beautiful mountain in bright sunshine? Never skied before and no idea where to start? Read on, let us stir that inspiration for you.

Skiing is too expensive. Isn’t it?

Skiing holidays don’t need to be expensive.

You can pick up some great deals to Austria, France and Italy if you’re flexible with your dates. Some under £200 including flights.

Where do I go?

If you’re new to skiing, the Whistler Blackcomb resort just north of Vancouver is a great place to start.

If it’s blue sky and sunshine you’re after, try Squaw Valley in Lake Tahoe.

For families, try Les Arcs in the French Alps.

If you’re more interested in the after ski parties, head to St Anton in Austria.

Do I need to be super fit?

Not super fit. But you do need to do some exercises to prepare your body.

Skiing and boarding may look easy but they take strong muscles and balance. It’s a good workout!

What do I need to work on before hitting the slope?

  • Stamina –get down to the gym and work on that cardiovascular fitness
  • Knees –a knee injury is one of the most common skiing injuries. You need to build up your leg muscles to protect your knee joints. Get on the exercise bike, do some leg presses and squats.
  • Core strength – skiing and boarding needs good body positioning, with strong core muscles (back and stomach) to support the pelvis.

Better still, ask the instructor at your local gym. They will be able to give you some great ski fit exercises.

Ok I’m ready for the slopes. Anything to remember on holiday?

Don’t forget to warm up just before you get onto the piste.  At the top of the lift do some squats and march on the spot. Yes, you’ll feel stupid. Not as stupid as you’ll feel if you have to get airlifted home though.

Some wise advice: don’t stop in the middle of the piste. Don’t ski after a boozing session. It wouldn’t hurt to wear a helmet.

Finally, have a blast. Skiing is one of the best things about winter.

I don't think skiing is a matter of class! It has to be said that it is a matter of money, but there are ways to spend less with cheaper resorts than those mentioned. There are also ski clubs in the UK on both snowdomes and dry slopes.

Yes, skiing is something of a middle class privilege. But I don't see why that has to be an insult. Or make it automatically pretentious. Each to their own.

I agree Olivia, it is too expensive to do, especially when you've got a family too. It's perhaps a little pretentious too. I've always thought of people who go skiing as very middle class. it certainly wasn't something many people did when I was a child and we didn't feel we were missing out on anything. So no, I don't feel inspired to ski!!

I'd love to be able to ski or snowboard, and I've tried both once before. The problem is it's just so impractical for most people to learn as it's so expensive - as is all the gear that goes with it. It is in my opinion, a very exclusive sport.

Skiing is great!! A skiing holiday is a great motivation for the gym workouts. But not really possible with a young baby so I will have to wait a while now - :( There are meant to be some skiing machines at gyms which might be good instead, but not seen any myself yet...

other wise advice - don't wear white ski clothes! See how the girl in the photo is disappearing from the waist down? Imagine what happens with an all-white outfit, and yet people wear them. Be visible!

You need to be surprisingly fit to ski. The better you are, the easier it is. If you are a beginner, just getting up after falling over all the time is exhausting enough! If you can afford it, ski school is the best way to learn.

I live for my skiing holidays. Nothing beats the adrenaline rush of the ski slope. And yes, you do have to have a certain level of fitness to enjoy it - which is a great source of motivation for my regular workouts.

Nice for those of us who could afford to go on holiday abroad and ski. I will stick to the gym and make do with watching the skiing on tv.
