KIT THAT FITS. EXERCISE CLOTHES FOR HOT WEATHER

The old saw ‘there’s no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothes’ gets trotted out regularly in the winter. It also applies in the summer, and especially for those of us trying to continue our usual workout in the heat. The wrong clothes can really make a workout miserable.

Here are five items to make hot weather exercise more comfortable. Exercise wear takes a hammering with regular use, so while some of these items are expensive they should last a long time - think about cost per wear.

1.    SHORTS FOR LADIES

Women are spoilt for choice when it comes to lower-body running or workout gear. You can choose any length from short shorts to full leggings. Capris (to mid-calf) are a popular option, but on really hot days they may be too warm. To combine freedom of movement with protection against chafing, a combination short such as these from Gear For Girls is a good choice. Good price too at £27.95.

2.    SHORTS FOR MEN

Cool and airy is the way to go. You may not want skin-tight unless you are cycling, but equally you don’t want too much fabric impeding movement. These shorts from Pearl Izumi (£59.99) provide moisture wicking, support, a pocket for your door key and a comfortable elasticated waistband.

3.     TOPS FOR LADIES

Running and exercise tops for ladies have to work with a support bra, which is an essential for all except the very lightly endowed. Fabrics need to be breathable and shoulder straps wide so that they don’t slip off. This versatile running/workout tank top from Odlo is an acceptable £32 and is designed to help keep you cool.

4.    TOPS FOR MEN

Breathable and wicking fabrics tend to work better than cotton when the heat is on and the sweat is pouring off. Treat yourself to a proper technical running top designed for the conditions. This Dri-Fit top from Nike (£43.20) features reflective bands for dusk or night running, and is designed without seams to avoid chafing.

5.    COOL SOCKS

Perhaps the worst thing about hot weather training is ultra-sweaty feet. The right socks can really make a difference here. Bamboo fibre is the latest innovation, with proven antibacterial and wicking powers. Try these clever shaped training socks from Puma for a bargain £7. They are tailored for left and right foot, which means cushioning is in the right places and blisters should be reduced.

So that’s your hot weather fitness clothing sorted. With some suitable hot weather food ideas and ways to help you sleep on muggy nights, you can breeze through summer!

I have shorts from Aldi - moisture-wicking, feel great quality and a 1/4 of the price of big brands. Does the job for me!

The rain is pouring around here but I've still been out in my shorts - I wear them all year around as there's nothing worse than sweaty legs!
