How to fix that hangover

Tis’ the season to overindulge. Chances are you’ll probably experience at least one hangover this festive season.

Here we look at some remedies for the dreaded hangover – ones that actually work!

Beauty sleep

If you have the luxury of grabbing a few more hours of shut-eye the morning after, then you’ll probably fare better for the rest of the day. Alcohol is metabolised at the rate of .015 of blood alcohol concentration (BAC), roughly one drink every hour, so give yourself time and you’ll start to feel more chipper!

Hydration

You feel awful after a heavy night because you are dehydrated. It’s important to replace the lost fluids by drinking water, juice, or even sports drinks. Keep your fluids topped up and you’ll start to perk up in no time.

Prevention

The best way to stop yourself having the hangover from hell is to prepare beforehand. Drink water throughout the evening in between your alcoholic beverages, ensure you’ve had a decent meal before you go out and stop before you get completely blotto (yeah, right!) Do all this and you’ve just given yourself half a chance of a clear head in the morning.

Steering clear of the bad remedies

Hair of the dog? A greasy fry-up? Likelihood is that these “cures” will actually make you feel much worse. Sadly, by drinking more alcohol you’re simply delaying the withdrawal you’ll get later on. And the greasy breakfast is no match for good, healthy food to replenish lost vitamins and minerals.

You're better off having a healthy shake full of veggies and berries, then going for a run or a light gym session to blow those cobwebs away.

i rarely binge drink any more. left that behind in my early twenties. After many many hangovers I realise you can still have a good night out without having to down 10 pints, and you can feel the damage it does to your body the next morning. Not for me anymore.

there is the most obvious cure - don't guzzle so much booze! It is actually possible to have fun, a drink or two and still wake up unharmed the next day. The bloke in the picture would get little sympathy in my office!

Lots of sensible advice here. My 'go to' hangover avoider is to drink lots of water and make sure I eat something before I go to bed. Saying that, I don't drink more than 3-4 pints anyway...
