Lowdown on the UK's favourite fitness technologies

Apps, monitoring and tracking devices are a great way to see quantifiable results. Here are some of the best to help you measure and share your progress with the fitness community.

MyFitnessPal

This app keeps track of what you’re eating with a food diary. Log your meals using a barcode scanner from a database of more than 3 million foods and it will figure out how many calories you’ve consumed.

Nike Fuelband

Tracking your activity, this wristband turns your movement into Nike Fuel points that you can compare with others. It works as a pedometer as well, counting the steps you take each day.

Fitbit Charge HR

The Charge HR can tell you just how hard you’re working, and measures your resting heart rate. The idea is to see your heart rate fall the fitter you get.

Fitbug 

This wearable tracker also comes with a coaching plan and gives you regular progress reports and sets goals.

Garmin Vivofit

A red line lets you know if you’re being inactive as this watch-style device tracks the number of steps you take. You can see how many calories you’ve burned and set yourself goals.

Apple Watch

If you’ve been sedentary for too long the Apple watch will set an alarm to let you know to keep moving, among any number of other apps available on this gadget.

I love my step counter app, encouragement to get off that chair and move around even during the working day. It's too easy to get sucked in to being sedentary and this is a great 'move it' prod.

I have an apple watch and one of the things I love about it is the Stand Up reminder which lets you know when you've been sat still for an hour. It's great for me with a desk job. I don't have any other gadgets though.

I have a fitbit Charge HR from Argos, wear it all day and absolutely love it. It's only a few pounds more than the basic charge but worth spending more for.

the only slight problem with these is that I don't think any of them can be used without a smartphone - unless someone knows different?
