THE AUSTERITY WORKOUT. MAKE THOSE PENNIES SWEAT

Whatever your politics, there’s no doubt that we live in a time where it pays to be prudent with the cash. That doesn’t mean that your fitness regime has to suffer.

If you’ve come to this site, you already know how to get great deals on gym sessions and fitness classes. Your cash needs to work as hard as you do, so take some time to look at getting the best value from your gym passes.

What else can be done to lower the cost of fitness?

WHAT EXERCISE CLOTHES DO I REALLY NEED?

It isn’t essential to go on an expensive shopping spree for fitness clothing. For most workouts, all you need is a t-shirt and some kind of shorts or trousers. Workout clothes should be reasonably close fitting to keep them out of the machines, and to help instructors see what you are doing.

This simple outfit will work for almost everything at the gym. If you are heading outside in the autumn or winter, that’s when you need more technical clothing to keep you warm and dry. Until then, check the wardrobe before hitting the shops.

For the pool, just pick something comfortable that stays put. Chlorine destroys fabric, which is a good incentive not to spend too much!

CAN I USE THE SAME TRAINERS FOR DIFFERENT SPORTS?

Footwear is more of an issue. If you are running you really need decent trainers. The wrong shoes can actually cause injuries.

Shoes are designed for different sports, and if you are serious about more than one type of fitness you really need more than one pair of trainers.

Shop around, try on and don’t be swayed by branding.

WHAT ABOUT COMPLETELY FREE OPTIONS?

Whatever the weather, there’s always a free workout. Here are some ideas for both indoors and out.

  • Home workout videos - there are hundreds available on line, or root out those dusty fitness DVDs.
  • Need some light free weights? Got a tin of baked beans? Job done!
  • Head to a park with an outdoor gym, and follow their circuit for a good fresh air workout.

Short on cash? There’s no need to go short on fitness!

Phillip, that would be great if they would install some. Not sure how these things can come about, but I am going to contact my gym and see if they could put a petition there or something similar. Just some parallel bars or something in the park would be good to start!

Craig - yes, I'm in the home counties where we have lots of outdoor gyms, they are a great idea. Hope your local council can be persuaded to fund some.

I have never seen an outdoor gym, but then I live in the north so maybe they're not around up there so much. I would definitely use one, it would make my runs more interesting.

on a beautiful day like today (and it is a bank holiday weekend, amazing!) there's every incentive just to get out here. I found a space on the outdoor gym in the local park. It was like being on holiday, lovely - and all free too!

I really don't think I'd get much benefit from a tin of baked beans, but I get the point. Bodyweight exercises are the way to go if you really don't have much money to spend on equipment.

AS long as it's baggy on the bottom and top, I'm happy. You wouldn't catch me in lycra anything! I get all my stuff from Wiggle, I think they're a fair price and good reviews too.

My best free workouts include running outside and doing squats in the kitchen. That said, I would really miss my proper gym worjouts and think they give me a more thorough 'going over' too.

as well as my payasugym deals, I'm a firm believer in cheap t-shirt and leggings for workouts. I may not look supersmart - but who does when hot and sweaty?
