Accentuate the positive: Three achievable fitness resolutions for 2015

Accentuate the positive: Three achievable fitness resolutions for 2015

Do you ‘do’ New Year resolutions?  The January burst of activity in our gyms and fitness centres proves that you aren’t alone.

The hard bit is keeping it going.

Can we confound the cynics and maintain our resolutions?

Sticking to a shiny new year fitness regime IS perfectly possible, but if it is going to happen it has to be done in the right way. You don’t want to be one of the 88 per cent that don’t stick to their resolutions.  Try these maxims for a positive outcome:

1.     DON’T ASK TOO MUCH OF YOURSELF – DO TRY TO LEARN SOMETHING NEW

There are plenty of fitness challenges and targets about, and plenty of people keen to sign you up for them. Give it a go – but be realistic. For example if you can’t ride a bike at the moment, it isn’t practical to sign up for a big endurance race. It IS practical to learn to cycle. One step at a time!

2.    DON’T TRY TO FIT TOO MUCH IN – DO GET YOUR PRIORITIES RIGHT

Fallen in love with a sport? Want to do nothing else? Fantastic – but do strike a balance. Enjoy your fitness, but don’t completely desert your loved ones or leave all the work to the other half. Perhaps they can join in too?

3.     DON’T DO SOMETHING YOU DON’T ENJOY – DO HAVE SOME FUN!

Wouldn’t it be great if that was a rule for life in general? Fortunately fitness is the exception – with so much choice, everyone can have fun while they keep fit. Indoors, outdoors, group, alone, in the water, to the music – there’s no excuse not to have fun while you keep fit.

So aim for the possible and accentuate the positive in 2015 – here’s to a happy, healthy and achievable new year!

Last year I tried to promise myself I'd do too much and I ended up burning out before February - this year I'm taking it a little easier, I have goals and aims but not hundreds of them!
