How could a Personal Trainer benefit you

You’ve managed to go to the gym a few times a week since January, which is fantastic. Now you’re not sure where to go next with your workout. You’ve done every online workout and group class available and are stumped for training ideas. 

It’s time to welcome the Personal Trainer (PT).

Coaching:

PTs are essentially there for you, like a coach would be for an athlete. They offer specific training programmes and expert knowledge about health and fitness. They create workouts based on your goals, taking into account things such as your previous exercise experiences, your current fitness levels and your activity likes and dislikes.

Having someone prescribe exercises you enjoy should motivate you to complete the sessions.

Keeping Track:

One thing every PT should definitely do is keep track of your training progressions and sessions. This includes counting out the reps, your movement patterns, making notes of the weights used or the time it takes to complete an exercise. Essentially like an athlete, you have fun doing the training and don’t worry about anything else!

New Ideas:

A PT should help you through a plateau and introduce you to new training ideas and concepts. Sometimes we all lack a little motivation to go to the gym, a booked PT session should get you excited and will make sure you go to the gym.

You’ll get the workout you want, leaving you feeling great.

Feedback:

PTs get involved and are attentive to their clients. Having someone there encouraging you and giving constant feedback not only pushes you more but also will help you get stronger, whilst improving your technique and reducing the risk of injury.

Not only will you be working harder you will be working better!

Motivation:

Having a programme designed specifically for you can be motivating, and give structure to your training.

By having sessions booked in advance its less likely that you would sack off the gym and go to the pub.

Nutrition:

Unless your PT has a special nutrition qualification they aren’t meant to give you anything other than advice when it comes to food and drink. However some do have extra qualifications and it is worth at least discussing nutrition with them as it has a huge effect on you and your training.

Some PTs will even offer to come on your weekly shop with you as part of their service to help you make the right choices for the whole family.

Goals:

There are a range of abilities when it comes to PTs. It's a good idea to do a little research before you sign up for a 10-week plan. A consultation will give you a good idea if that PT will be able to help you or not. The consultation is great because it will help you create some specific goals.

It’s also a time when your PT can assess your movement patterns and build your programme around your strength and weaknesses. It’s like buying a new car, you test drive it first and go for the best deal you can.

So try it out, most personal trainers will offer one off sessions to get a little taster of what a PT is all about. Even if you don’t like it you will probably learn some new things that you can take away with you.

I know someone who is a personal trainer and she absolutely loves it. But she was very dedicated to doing it, spent nearly 3k on the course, so you know they're committed when they're qualified cos who would pay that amount otherwise?

motivation is no 1 - if I have an appointment I turn up, if it is just 'I should go to the gym' then there may be excuses. So I can see that definitely working.

I do like the thought of someone completely structuring and organising my workouts. There's so many different ideas to try I get overwhelmed with what to do when. So that would. in my book, be worth paying for. But I still ain't got the cash!

I'd love a personal trainer but yes - too expensive!! Maybe one or two sessions to get you on the right track would be ok?

I used to have a personal trainer who made me do lots of hill runs. I had never been so fit, and definitely wouldn't have done it so much if he hadn't motivated me. Shame I can't afford one now as my work paid for it.
