Why women need to lift

Although weightlifting has been highlighted as a fantastic part of all workouts for all people of all body types, some women are still reluctant to give it a go.

There are many benefits of lifting for your body but first let’s dispel one myth: you won’t get bulky. Lots of women are worried that weightlifting will have them looking like a body builder but this simply isn’t the case.

Firstly, your body doesn’t produce enough testosterone to support a bulk physique. Secondly, female body builders work to an extreme level to achieve their physique and regular weightlifting as part of your normal gym routine won’t result in this.

Here is why women should be lifting for all body fitness:

Boost Fat Loss

A strong cardio workout is all well and good but a regime that only includes cardio will soon lead to plateau as your metabolic rate will drop as your body meets the challenges you set for it. Whilst cardio is good for fat loss, the sensible thing to do is incorporate weight training sessions too. You’ll get more fat loss from your cardio workouts if you build in strength training.

Burn more Calories

Vigorous weight training can boost your metabolic rate and this in turn helps to make your body more efficient at burning calories, even when you’re not exercising. Weight training is a better option than the treadmill almost every time as too much cardio can reverse any positive changes to your metabolism – you’re looking for a good balance.

Get Lean and Toned

It’s a common misconception that the best way to shape and tone your body is to stick to low-intensity cardio workouts. Your best option is to build strength and muscle and you’ll soon see your body’s natural curves brought out. Low-intensity cardio has its value but if it is all you do then soon you will see yourself losing muscle mass rather than building it.

Stay Energised All Day

Research has shown time and again that weight training has a real benefit on your psychological health. It helps to enhance your sense of vitality and can boost your energy all day. Whilst hours spent on the treadmill or other cardio machines can leave you feeling wiped out, lifting leaves you feeling fantastic and boosts those endorphins – ensuring your feeling energised from morning ‘til night.

Even as a bloke, I'm glad to see this article and will show my gf. The weight training section at our gym is still dominantly men though so it's a tough pattern to break.

I love using my weights and never knew there were so many benefits!! When I was younger it was all cardio so it's quite hard to get your head around the emphasis on weights.
