Aqua Aerobics 101

Aqua Aerobics 101

By Katherine Webb

Are the days of simple lane swimming numbered?  Aqua aerobics classes are making a splash across the UK and can enhance a traditional gym workout.

Let’s take a look at what the fuss is about.

What is it?

Aqua aerobics is really doing the same aerobic and muscle-conditioning exercises you would in a ‘dry’ gym but in water. Versions include aqua fit, aqua jogging, aqua yoga , aqua Zumba and ‘poolates’. Classes vary in intensity so choose carefully.

Expect moves like marching, stepping and jogging choreographed by a motivational instructor. Sometimes props are used to enhance the session. These could include floats, ankle weights, dumbbells, webbed gloves or even underwater steps.

What are the benefits?

Exercising in water improves flexibility and tones muscles without stressing your joints or risking injury. It doesn’t make this an easy workout though. Water workouts make your muscles work harder because you are fighting against the water resistance with every move. This means faster toning up with 30% more calories burned than equivalent land exercises.

Who can do it?

Many gym newbies try water exercise as it increases their flexibility and endurance ready for tougher gym workouts. Others gym-users do a session as part of a cross-training programme or simple to add some balance to their workouts.

Aqua aerobics is particularly suitable for people suffering from bad backs, arthritis, are pregnant or overweight . Many athletes train in the water when recovering from an injury, so it’s a good go-to when you’re trying to regain your form after a setback.

What should I wear?

Most equipment is provided by the pool so all you need to do is turn up in your swimwear. You can also buy special aqua aerobics shoes, socks and flotation belts.

Shake up your gym workouts. Give aqua aerobics a try!

Poolates? Love it. This looks like a great workout for dodgy joints so I'll be looking out the swimsuit.

I really like the sound of Aqua Zumba too! Swimming is sooooo boring so this makes a great alternative.
