Early riser or night owl. Which workout suits you best?

Whether you’re up with the lark or you’re more of a night owl might depend on when you get the most out of your workout. If you’re putting the effort in at some point of the day though, does it really matter when you do it?

If you can leap out of bed and seem fresh as a daisy before 6am then hats off to you, but a workout before the daily grind begins can be just a bit too much for most. The benefits of course mean that you have a full day of not worrying about fitting in a run or a gym session, because you’ve already done it. You can also feel very smug when your colleagues offer you a lunchtime doughnut, knowing that you’ve already worked the calories off!

The other advantage of an early morning workout is that you’re unlikely to see many other people working out with you. So if you prefer your own company or like to exercise unseen, then the crack of dawn is the perfect time for you.

A lot of people use a late evening session to unwind from the day. It’s a way of forgetting everything that happened at work, and can also lead to more restful sleep. The downside is of course that if you get a better offer of going to the pub or out for a meal, then your workout might suffer.

In reality, as long as you’re putting in exercise during the day, whether it’s in the morning or evening, then you’ll reap the rewards. It’s a personal matter as to when suits you best.

An early morning session will wake you up, just as an evening session can help you unwind.

Most gyms are open from early in the morning to late at night, so give both a go to help you decide what’s right for you. Let us know which one you find better!

Early mornings are best for me. I work shifts and love my later starts so i can get up and go to the gym first. I feel positive and full of energy for quite a while after. I'm also much more likely to have a healthy lunch too. Tip - if you go while everyone's doing the school run it's also incredibly quiet!

The earlier the better for me, so this is often in the mornings. But really it depends when the bodypump class is on!!

what about the middle of the day? I like to exercise around 11, when my children are at school, breakfast has gone down but before I've had lunch.

It's morning workouts all the way for me! Sets me up feeling virtuous for the rest of the day, once it's done it's done and I can concentrate on other things, and I like the idea that it means my metabolism is raised for hours afterwards to I can justify a lunchtime treat!

I'm with you Joseph - 5 am jog, no way! I go to the gym in the evening and sleep just fine. But then a well-deserved pint or two after my workout probably helps!

They say you're not really supposed to exercise within four hours of going to bed if you have trouble sleeping but there's no way you'd have me up at 5am for a jog.

I try to do both. Something active in the early part of the day and then yoga or Pilates in the evening. As the article says, there are different advantages to be had for exercising at different times of the day - seems silly to limit yourself to just one window of exercise.

I definitely prefer early morning exercise. It gets it out the way and sets me up for the day. Plus it seems to be a lot quieter in the gym. But I realise not a lot of people have time first thing.
