Exercise 101 : TRX straps

The TRX suspension trainer is one of the most efficient and effective pieces of equipment available. In fact, it’s the one piece of equipment at the gym which allows for a whole-body workout.

If you want whipping into shape military-style, it’s time to try it out.

WHAT IS TRX?

Originally designed by an Ex-Navy Seal, TRX utilises your own bodyweight and the force of gravity to work your entire body. It uses the TRX Suspension Trainer, which is made of two yellow and black straps (you may have seen them hanging around in the gym) which you attach to your hands or feet to partially suspend your bodyweight.

WHY SHOULD I DO IT?

TRX offers several advantages over other training:

 Firstly, the adjustable straps create an infinite number of exercises (over 300), meaning you can quickly transition from one muscle group to the next. This keeps your heart-rate up and saves time otherwise lost jumping between machines.

Secondly, you can easily vary the intensity of the exercise by simply adjusting your feet.  This means that whatever your fitness level, from obsessed fitness junkies, personal trainer or complete gym newbies your own bodyweight as resistance will give exactly the right workout for you.

Finally - you will never get bored.  The routines are exciting and you can change your workouts as much as you like. Mixing up workouts is more productive and means your mind as well as your body is being challenged.

WHAT ARE THE FITNESS BENEFITS?

Each and every exercise you do will work your entire body. As you try to maintain stability, any move which traditionally targets just one area will automatically move every muscle and work you to the core.

The equipment helps develop balance, flexibility and core stability whilst giving you a challenging cardio and strength workout too. It is incredibly effective at burning fat,  building muscle and getting a rock-solid core.

It’s very low-impact which means your joints aren’t put under too much pressure. Injury risk is low, which means you can train as hard as you like.

WHAT EXERCISES WILL THERE BE?

TRX exercises include classics you know already such as the plank, squats and lunges. Variations are added to this old theme which delivers a totally new but unintimidating workout.

If you’ve never done TRX before, find a local gym which holds classes, and try a session before you sign up for individual sessions. You will learn how to use the equipment properly and can ask any questions.

Well, ok they look gimmicky but after having read a bit more about them I would probably give them a go. They sound very versatile anyway, so saves space on other gym equipment I guess.

I did a 30min TRX class last week. It certainly targets every bit of your body and there is no hiding as classes are small and instructors check your position/form etc. I consider myself pretty fit (5/week gymmer - 2 x cardio/2xweightsesh and body balance) and I discovered muscles I didn't know existed and boy did they sing for a couple of days. This is not gimmicky at all.

Hmm, these look like a gimmicky thing to me. I have seen them hanging in gyms and they just look like they're taking up valuable space where people could be weightlifting.

We use them all the time in Serbia. They are great for working out the whole body as they help incorporate stability of the core when doing simple moves. Randy Hetrick, a US Navy Seal invented them as a way of keeping fit. From the TRX site: Randy "...uses a jujitsu belt, parachute webbing and sheer ingenuity to develop the first version." Great that he did because we have a very versatile, space saving product that allows us to hit every single muscle group, with the majority of exercises hitting two or three.

I used to use gymnast rings when I was younger. I guess these are similar. I have never seen them in our gym but would love to try some!!
