Top 10: Reasons to Exercise

Top 10: Reasons to Exercise

Who doesn’t love a ‘top ten’ list? Whether it is songs by a particular artist, favourite holiday destinations or best chocolate biscuits, there’s bound to be a list somewhere. So here is a top ten of ‘reasons to get moving’. Let the countdown begin!

1. Fewer illnesses

Research has shown that regular exercisers get fewer colds due to a temporary immune system boost.

2. Fewer injuries

Getting fit doesn’t just target one particular part of the body. For instance, strengthening those all-important core muscles protects back and legs from strains. Strengthen one part, save another!

3. Better sleep

There’s nothing like a pleasant sense of physical tiredness to deal with insomnia. Try not to exercise too late in the day so that you can wind down before bed.

4. Better skin

Getting the blood pumping gets more oxygen to all the organs, including the biggest one. Get moving and get glowing!

5. Stronger bones

Weight-bearing exercise (as simple as a brisk walk) is essential to strengthen bones and reduce the chance of osteoporosis in later life.

6. Heart health

You won’t see the most vital of organs improving as you work out, but be assured that it is happening.

7. Ability to eat more

There isn’t much arguing with the simple fact that calories not used are stored as fat. Those who use more calories, get to enjoy more food.

8. Less stress

The ‘exercise high’ doesn’t have to be all that high to make us feel better.

9. Longer life

A hard one to prove, but there are strong suggestions that keeping fit keeps us around for longer. This must be the ultimate in ‘use it or lose it’.

Number 10. Perhaps the most important: happiness

The old maxim of ‘a healthy mind in a healthy body’ has stood the test of time because it is true.

This is just one set of ten. There are plenty more good reasons – which would you add?

I think our reasons change over time. When I was younger it was for looking good, Now I'm more concerned with health reasons, and keeping stress at bay.

Happiness is the top of my list. I am definitely a nicer person to be around when I feel energized and physically healthy!

anything from a brisk walk upwards ticks the boxes - but it is scary that some don't even do that. The exercise target for health is just 30 minutes a day, it really isn't too much to ask.

How could anyone argue with a single one of these points? It should be simple but so many people don't exercise - it seems unthinkable to me!
