gym DETAILS

One of Islington’s most popular gyms and fitness centres, the Sobell Leisure Centre has been part of local life for more than 40 years. Its iconic status was recognised with its selection as a 2012 Olympic training venue. Since then the Sobell Leisure Centre has received further upgrades, and now offers a huge range of activities for all ages and fitness levels.

The centre is near to the Emirates Stadium, home of Arsenal Football Club, and just a few minutes from all the shops and facilities of Holloway Road.

The centre has a well-equipped and fresh gym which features the latest Life Fitness gym equipment. The choice includes free weights, treadmills, rowers and a dedicated stretching area. Fitness instructors are on hand for advice and to help tailor a personalised exercise programme. A wide and innovative range of group exercise classes is also offered, meeting the needs of many different ages and interests. Whether you want to build muscle, increase cardiovascular fitness or simply stretch and tone, there will be a class here for you. All the modern favourites such as Zumba and Pilates are here, along with standards such as ‘legs bums and tums’ and step aerobics. Please be aware that classes are not included within the PayasUgym pass price. To book onto any of these classes, please contact reception directly.

Customers of this gym especially like the value for money offered and the enormous variety of classes. The centre also offers other activities (at additional cost) including ice skating, squash and a climbing wall.

How to find us:

The centre is located on Hornsey Road between Tollington Road and Seven Sisters Road.

The nearest station is Finsbury Park (Piccadilly line, Victoria line and National Rail).

Bus 91 (Tottenham Lane YMCA – Whitehall) stops outside the centre when southbound, with the northbound stop nearby on Holloway Road. Bus routes 4 (Archway – Waterloo) and 29 (Wood Green – Trafalgar Square) also stop outside when heading west, with the eastbound stops on Holloway Road. Many other routes also stop nearby.

Staff are friendly, wish the music was louder though in the main gym.

Brilliant value for money, clean changing rooms and the gym is one of the best

Nice gym with good range of cardio machines, stretching areas, weight machines and free weights. Also 2 spinning bikes and cable machines. Changing rooms were very spacious. Only minor issue was water pressure on showers as they were not that powerful

The building is huge and a bit shabby but the gym itself has been recently refurbed and is very good. Had trouble redeeming my Unlimited pass. Had to blag my way in and ask PAYG team to redeem it for me.

The class itself is good but there's not enough equipment and the pass never works at reception

Have had trouble with my unlimited pass here but I had a day pass that wasn't redeemed the first time, and strangely that worked instead. Gym is well equipped and not busy, though could have more floor space. Note that Sauna is NOT included but the receptionist kindly gave me a pass for it anyway.

a bit small but has enough to keep you busy

The range of resistance machines is pretty decent, but not perfect (missing a few muscle groups like calves). It can sometimes be hard to find a member of staff. It's a busy gym, and the day passes are over-priced. I'm told the spin classes are good, but it's not a good gym for strength training.

Girls was friendly on reception, easily redeemed my pass and showed me where to go. Had to pay for parking, on top of 7.30 to use the gym. Limited choice of weights, no smith/bench press, no large barbell weights, wouldn't go again for the cost
