FITNESS EARBUDS. MUCH MORE THAN MUSIC

FITNESS EARBUDS. MUCH MORE THAN MUSIC

A motivating personal soundtrack to a workout is an essential for most of us. The latest earbuds now offer much more than your favourite tunes, with everything from full waterproofing to heart rate monitoring. Here are some things to consider when choosing your next pair.

SIZE AND FIT

The best sound in the world is no good if the earbuds hurt your ears, or keep falling out.  Most offer a choice of sizes, or check out the customised 3D printed versions that are now available.

Many earbuds also have ‘ambient mode’ which allows external sound through. This is an essential safety feature for those building up the running miles outside the gym. (Note that earbuds or headphones are not recommended at all for cyclists)

MUSIC SOURCE

Some earbuds connect to a small MP3 player, while others take their music from your phone. Using your phone means a wider choice, but it is less convenient to carry. You also may not want to risk your phone on a wet night, let alone in a swimming pool.

THE RIGHT EARBUD FOR YOUR WORKOUT

Runners will want earbuds that stay in place whatever their pace. The associated music source needs to be lightweight and easy to carry. Earbuds don’t need to be waterproof, but should be resistant against sweat.

Swimmers do need full waterproofing – but this is now possible for both the earbud and the music player. Just remember not to sing along!

FITNESS TRACKING AND MONITORING

Fitness tracker sensors need to be in the right place on the body. The best place is somewhere that doesn’t move, has blood vessels close to the surface and isn’t a spot for tattoos. (Why? Because dark ink blocks the sensor)

This means that the ear is an excellent place for a fitness tracker sensor. Gadgets such as the Samsung Gear Icon X make use of this to track heart rate and fitness stats. The earbuds sync up with your phone and are available in three sizes for that perfect fit.

With so many choices of earbuds, it could be time for a last minute letter to Santa before your next trip to the gym.

This is my real bug bear. I have quite small ear holes and struggle to find any which don't fall out. I have now found a pair and am sticking with them though forget the actual name so I can't advise anyone. ,

There's nothing worse than earbuds that end up falling out when you're trying to run, jump or do anything vigorous! I still haven't found the perfect pair so will look more closely at your recommendations - Thanks.
