The best way to stay trim according to science

Many people want to lose weight, but it’s easy to get confused with all the information out there telling us to exercise more (but the right kind) and eat less (but the right foods).

So what does science say? Here’s the most up-to-date information on what the experts tell us about getting trim and staying trim.

THE STUDY

Many overweight people try to lose weight by following a low fat, low-carbohydrate The trouble is, weight tends to creep back on again after a year. This study attempted to find out which diet best maintains weight loss.

Researchers wanted to find out the best way to reduce total body weight and cardiovascular risk in overweight patients and patients with metabolic syndrome and to keep this weight off for at least a year. They evaluated the diet and exercise habits of 626 patients to see how the different habits affected body weight and cardiovascular risk after one year.

WHAT DID THE STUDY FIND?

The results showed that lifestyle habits play a key role in maintaining significant weight loss. 33.7% of patients who followed a low calorie Mediterranean diet and performed daily exercise showed a minimum of 5% weight loss after a year. These lifestyle changes also controlled their glucose levels, so their risk of diabetes was also reduced.  

In fact, the most weight loss was found to occur after 12 months, so the diet definitely helped maintain any weight loss. Scientists believe this means the associated cardiovascular benefits will also be sustained in the long term.

i have followed a mainly mediterranean diet for years and it makes me feel very healthy, plus I do not put on weight if I combine it with regular exercise. But the main thing is you know you're eating really well which makes you feel mentally good too.

It's very easy to stay trim if you've got an active job and plenty of money, I think it's harder with a desk job (like me) and not a big salary (like me) which means you can't a afford to eat a healthy diet so easily.

it is noticeable that those not trying to sell anything say 'eat properly, move more'. Those who are trying to sell faddy diets pooh-pooh this simple and obvious advice, which has been proved over and over again. Who would you trust?

As I understand it, the Mediterranean diet isn't a diet, it is lots of tasty food! No-one ever got fat eating too many vegetables, so eating this way doesn't feel restrictive. Hence no failure as with all the fad diets.
