TEN OF THE HEALTHIEST FOODS YOU CAN EAT

TEN OF THE HEALTHIEST FOODS YOU CAN EAT

Humans are omnivorous, which means that very few foods are bad for us. It is our overall diet that makes us healthy, with a good mix of nutrients and the right number of calories.

Here are 10 of the top foods that give us the best mix for good health:

1.NUTS

A good source of plant-based omega-3, which reduces cholesterol.  Nuts also provide the essential trace minerals we need.

2. OILY FISH

Fish-sourced omega-3 is even better at helping your heart. It lowers blood pressure and can improve circulation. Eat the little fish with bones and you also get more calcium.

3. POTATOES

Potatoes are low in calories for their size, have plenty of fibre and vitamin C.  Eat your good carbs!

4. CRUCIFEROUS VEGETABLES

Cabbage, broccoli and even horseradish contain vitamins B and C, antioxidants and flavonoids. These compounds are believed to have an effect in lowering cancer risk.

5. BEANS

Full of vitamins, protein and dietary fibre, beans also contain potassium, manganese and trace elements. Reduce your meat, eat more beans!

6. DARK CHOCOLATE

It may be a surprise to see chocolate on a list of healthy foods, but cocoa contains flavonoids which can reduce bad cholesterol levels. Eat a couple of squares a day and enjoy!

7. CITRUS FRUITS

Most of us know that citrus fruits are an excellent source of vitamin C. Their fibre content also means that fruit sugars are absorbed more slowly, so no sudden spikes and drops in blood sugar.

8. GARLIC

The allicin that gives garlic its smell is good for your heart, can fight bacteria and may even inhibit the growth of cancerous cells.

9. LEAFY GREEN VEGETABLES

Eating your greens provides nutrition essential for eyesight, healing, muscle growth and much more. Eat as much as you like!

10. AVOCADO

Avocados are calorie dense but contain good monounsaturated fat, vitamin C, vitamin K and folate. Eat in moderation with your salad or sandwich.

Include this ‘top ten’ in your diet and you won’t go far wrong.

I had nuts, avocado, green leaves, potatoes, garlic, citrus fruits and dark chocolate yesterday. Seems like I'm on track!
