THE BEST FOODS TO FEND OFF HUNGER AND KEEP YOU FULL

THE BEST FOODS TO FEND OFF HUNGER AND KEEP YOU FULL

Wouldn’t it be great if there were foods that induced weight loss? Sadly negative calorie food (which takes more energy to eat than it gives) is a myth. We can have the next best thing, food that makes us eat less by keeping us feeling fuller for longer.

The mechanisms that control hunger are always subject to research, but we know that they are connected to glucose levels in the blood stream and to hormones.

Here are 5 foods that will keep those hunger signals under control:

1.PORRIDGE

The traditional warming breakfast is chock-full of slow release carbohydrates. Your body releases the glucose from these gradually into your bloodstream. That keeps the hunger indicators switched off. With a microwave and a pack of oats, this satisfying breakfast can be ready in minutes.

2.EGGS

Protein really triggers the ‘I’m full’ signals in the endocrine system. As yet scientists don’t know exactly why, but anyone who has enjoyed scrambled eggs on toast for lunch will have the evidence. However you like your eggs, make the most of this easy-packed convenience food to stop the afternoon munchies.

3.BEANS

The dietary fibre in legumes is another trigger to tell us to stop eating. Fibre doesn’t add calories, but the bulk is essential for the function of our digestive systems. It also provides a physical ‘full’ signal.

4.PISTACHIO NUTS

Although nuts are very calorie dense, pistachios have the lowest calorie count by weight. The fat in them is hard for us to digest so we get less food value from them. They are also fiddly to eat, which slows down consumption. That allows time for our bodies to say ‘enough’.

5.WATER

No calories, no nutrition – but water is still an essential. We can mistake hunger for thirst, so slow things down and ensure hydration by drinking a glass of plain tap water with your meal.

Take longer to enjoy your food, and your food will fuel you for longer.

beans on toast for me, then - the old student standby is that for a reason, cheap and really does fill you up. Nice to see it confirmed.

how bizarre - it is a work from home day, I've just had scrambled eggs on toast for lunch! It does indeed stop me nibbling through the afternoon, which is far too easy to do at home.
