Too much sugar in your coffee? Try an alternative

If you’re tightening up your diet and want to shift some of your sugar intake, that spoon or two in your coffee cup needs to go.

Increased sugar consumption is very closely linked to the growing obesity problem in the UK, as well as the growing number of people with diabetes. It is possible to develop sugar dependency and everyone knows that feeling of a crash after too much sugar.

Instead, try some of the sugar alternatives mentioned below:

Stevia

Not everyone likes the taste of stevia but it is a wholly natural herb which works as a natural sweetener. It also has the ability to help balance blood sugar levels and assist in the control of blood pressure.

Cinnamon

Popping cinnamon in your coffee gives it a hint of sweetness as well as spice and it also has the added benefit of an immune system boost. You could sprinkle cinnamon on top of your coffee, mix it in with the ground coffee before cooking or even stir it up with a cinnamon stick.

Nut Milk or Cream

Choosing a nut-based milk, coconut milk or even coconut cream immediately adds more substance to your coffee. It also adds the natural sweetness of the nut in question, whether that’s almond milk, coconut cream or another nut milk of your choice. Oat milk also adds a subtle sweetness which can replace the need for sugar.

Unsweetened Cocoa

Everyone loves a mocha so why not make one without the sugar hit or high calorie syrups? You can create a sweet and tasty mocha by simply adding unsweetened cocoa powder to your favourite coffee. Cacao is also known to have antioxidant properties and the best way to get that sweet chocolate hit is to mix the powder in with the coffee grounds before brewing.

Vanilla or Almond Extract

Naturally sweet when popped into coffee and ideal when weaning yourself off refined sugar or processed sweeteners. Even a single drop of vanilla or almond extract will give you that sweetness you’re looking for.

Butter and Coconut Oil

The idea of putting butter in your coffee may sound awful but it really does work. As more studies show that it is sugar, not fat, causing significant obesity problems, more people are embracing natural, full fat products. Stirring butter or an alternative fat such as coconut oil into your coffee helps to boost its flavour, gives it a sweeter edge and creates a fuller, creamier consistency.

Sea Salt

Adding salt to your coffee to make it sweeter may sound like nonsense but many people say a small sprinkling of sea salt can actually help to balance the bitterness of coffee. Salt reduces this bitterness so the naturally sweet coffee flavours come through and the bitterness is mellowed.

salt in coffee - nope, i think I will need more persuading for that one. Cinnamon is a good idea though, can see that working.

Great idea to make your own mocha. I can recommend adding coconut milk to it for a real mix of flavours.

Wow - I have never heard of coconut oil or salt in coffee. i am definitely going to try this today!
