Its many years since taking a spoon of cod liver oil before bed was the norm but perhaps our grannies were onto something. Scientists believe cod liver oil has many health benefits, most importantly protecting against the pain of arthritis. Research also suggests that it can help to protect against inflammatory disease, the skin condition psoriasis and even ease menstrual pain.
Nutritionists are worried about the lack of oily fish in the modern diet. The latest government data suggest that average consumption of oily fish is well below the recommended one portion per week in all age groups and this further pushes the case for taking cod liver oil.
Below are three key benefits of adding this supplement to your diet.
The omega 3 fatty acid EPA has anti-inflammatory benefits which are known to help reduce stiffness, pain and swelling in joint tissues which have become inflamed. This makes it extremely effective for people suffering from arthritis and it can reduce the need for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
The omega 3 fatty acid DHA is found in high concentration within the eye. It helps to strengthen the retina and promote normal, healthy vision. Vitamin A is also essential for maintaining health eyes and improving vision at night. These nutrients are also valuable in preventing age-related macular degeneration and even cataracts.
The brain, like the eye, has a high omega 3 content. DHA again is in high concentration and is essential for the health and development of the brain, which is why cod liver oil is recommended for the growing brains of children. It can also help to reduce depression and age-related memory loss.
Cod liver oil can be taken in liquid or capsule form and is found in most pharmacies and health shops. Taking the supplement is a great idea if your weekly oily fish intake frequently falls short.
Another vitamin on the list for keeping my nogger healthy when I'm old. I have been taking it for a few years already so glad to be reminded of the benefits.
This was the only vitamin my mum had in the house when we were younger. I still remember the flavour of the liquid, but it did taste very 'healthy'. Great for children's developing brains apparently too.
I can't stand eating fish which makes it difficult to get enough of this in my system. I'm thankful there are capsules.
poor old cod-liver oil, it has a very bad reputation - but oily fish is so very good for us. And tastes good too!

you can buy very cheap cod liver oil in Lidl, if anyone's interested. Not sure of the quality though. Personally, I can't afford to spend money on the top end range of vitamins.
