COLD CURE? TRY AN ONION IN YOUR SOCK

COLD CURE? TRY AN ONION IN YOUR SOCK

IT’S THE TIME OF YEAR FOR COLDS AND FLU, MAKING US MISERABLE AND STOPPING US EXERCISING. BUT WHAT IF THERE WAS A HASSLE-FREE WAY TO REDUCE THE RISK OF GETTING UNWELL? AND EVEN BETTER, WHILE YOU SLEEP?

Here’s an idea –try putting an onion in your sock. What’s that all about?

People have used onions for centuries to prevent illness, believing them to act as ‘bacteria magnets’. During the plague people used to chop onions in half and leave them in their rooms to purify the air. Ayurvedic medicine has always used an ‘onion poultice’ on the chest or feet to cure coughs and fevers.

You may scoff at the idea of onions in your socks. But we already know they’re nutritionally incredibly good for us. Here’s a reminder of their benefits:

HEALTH BENEFITS OF ONIONS

  1. NATURALLY ANTI-VIRAL. Onions are naturally anti-inflammatory, antibiotic and anti-viral. They absorb germs, pathogens and bacteria which may otherwise make you unwell. This is why some people believe you shouldn’t use that old bacteria-infested onion in the bottom of the fridge.
  2. BLOOD PURIFYING. Onions are very high in quercitin, a powerful antioxidant flavanoid which can thin the blood, lower cholesterol, and fight many infections.
  3. DETOXIFYING. Onions contain sulphur-containing compounds (this is what gives them their strong smell. Sulphur is an excellent detoxifier and helps the body release toxins, especially heavy metals.

WHY IN YOUR SOCKS?

According to Chinese medicine the bottom of our feet contain direct access points (meridians) to our internal organs. Because our soles contain 7,000 meridians our feet access many different organs.

Putting onion skin against the soles of your feet as you sleep allows phosphoric acid to enter the bloodstream, a process called trans-dermal application. While you sleep the onion will apparently purify the blood, absorb toxins and kill bacteria that may be waiting ready to give you the flu!

Socks obviously hold the onion in place while you sleep.

HOW TO:

  1. Use organic onions so you are not also absorbing pesticides and chemicals.
  2. Slice onions (red or white) into flat slices.
  3. Place a slice or two of onion into each sock. Slip your foot inside to secure the onion on the flat of your foot.
  4. Sleep!

While science is yet to prove its effectiveness, many people fervently believe in the power of onion socks. What’s your opinion? Have you tried it? Do you think it’s at least worth a try? Let us know.

really? REALLY? Does anyone actually do this? I agree with Jim. Anyone getting into bed with me with onions in their socks should expect to experience some form of cold - because they'll be kicked out of bed!

bedsocks at night are bad enough - I fear that onions in them overnight are probably grounds for divorce!

Well I have never heard this before. Now you have told me this I am going to have to try it the next time I have a cold. No harm can be done I guess, so why not?!
