The importance of a good night's sleep

Shakespeare described sleep in beautiful terms as ‘nature’s soft nurse’. Unfortunately the pressures of busy lives can mean that sleep time is the first to be cut out.  

Here are 5 reasons why you should prioritise sleep:

1. SLEEP BUSTS STRESS

Sleep deprivation makes the smallest problems seem insurmountable – just ask any new parent. As well as the debilitating effects of exhaustion, there is a vicious circle of stress affecting sleep which means that you get even more stressed!

Resolve to put problems aside at bedtime. Learn to relax and you will be far better equipped to deal with issues in the morning.

2. SLEEP CONTROLS WEIGHT

There’s more to this than the obvious fact that you probably aren’t eating while you are asleep. Studies are beginning to show that poor sleep patterns can contribute to obesity, as hunger hormones rise with lack of sleep. Add stress from exhaustion and there is a recipe for overeating.

3. SLEEP SOLVES PROBLEMS

‘Sleep on it’ they say, and that advice is very valid. Your brain doesn’t stop totally while you sleep, and being well-rested usually puts things into perspective. The bigger the decision, the more sleep needed. You may well find that the answer becomes obvious after a couple of good nights of rest.

4. SLEEP HELPS US STAY SAFE

Did you know that tired drivers can be charged with motoring offences? Tired drivers can and have killed others.  This also applies to anyone operating machinery or doing a job where decisions are critical. The effects of lack of sleep can go beyond the tired person, so look after yourself and others by getting your rest.

5. SLEEP IMPROVES PHYSICAL HEALTH

Poor sleep can slow down healing, raise blood pressure and even increase the chance of a heart attack. That's because poor sleep can increase cholesterol levels. Rest is also essential if you are recovering from illness.

There’s no doubt – good sleep is good for you. Improve your sleep hygiene and have that all-important healthy night’s rest.
