DRY MONTH WHY YOU SHOULD TRY IT AND WHAT TO DRINK INSTEAD

Thousands of people commit to a 'dry January'. Are you taking the challenge? The month is almost at an end - here's why you should keep it up

Dry January is a campaign by Alcohol Concern which encourages people to ditch the drink for 31 days. Last year 16 percent of the UK population took part so you will not be alone in your abstinence. 

Giving up alcohol for a month not only gives your body a chance to recover, there are plenty of other - less obvious - benefits. But it’s not always easy to do. So make sure to remember why you are doing it:

1. HEALTH BENEFITS

Firstly, remind yourself of the health benefits of cutting out alcohol. Research from the Royal Free Hospital claims a booze-free month will improve blood-sugar levels, blood pressure, boost concentration and detox the liver.

Previous participants also cite the benefits of better sleep, clearer skin, and weight loss. One study showed now just one month off booze will help reduce liver stiffness of heavier drinkers.

There’s even a chance Dry January may inspire you for longer. 65% of last year’s participants were drinking less 6 months later, while 8% continued staying completely dry.

Don’t forget, you will also be reducing the risk serious diseases such as cancer, diabetes, stroke, heart disease, liver disease and damage to the nervous system.

2. MORE MONEY TO TREAT YOURSELF

The money you would have spent on alcohol can be put to more positive use. Do you want to save for a holiday? Buy new workout clothes? By tracking your savings you will be motivated to stick to it, and maybe even continue your cutbacks.

Alcohol Concern has a free app that will track your booze-free days and how much you’ve saved.  An app called I am Sober is also available to keep you motivated and track your savings. You’ll be amazed how it all mounts up.

3. TIME TO START A NEW HOBBY

Giving up alcohol is doing something positive for your life. Continue the theme of self-improvement by starting a new course, learn an instrument, or try out a new fitness class.

4. ALCOHOL-FREE DRINKS

It’s good to have a few delicious drinks to treat yourself to. Most are so delicious you won’t miss the alcohol. Favourites include mulled apple juice, healthy vegetable juices, or ginger beer. Make sure to use a tall elegant glass to create a special feeling. Try this Mint, Lime and Ginger Splash, or any of these non-alcoholic cocktails

I like the thought of this but would never do it. I do enjoy a glass of wine or two on a weekend and see no reason why i should give this very pleasurable treat up! Saying that, I don't drink a lot so maybe dry January is aimed at people who feel they need to get some control.
