GOLDEN RULES FOR GOOD HEALTH

GOLDEN RULES FOR GOOD HEALTH

Over the last few years, the concept of ‘wellness’ has become one of the mainstream approaches to good health. Much more than simply the opposite of illness, it describes all aspects of physical and mental health and how they affect every part of our lives.

Wellness ideas go beyond exercise and healthy eating to cover things such as socialisation and stress reduction. Try these wellness ‘golden rules’ for a holistic approach.

GET YOUR EXERCISE AND LOOK AFTER YOUR SHAPE

Exercise has to be fun if you are going to stick to it, so have a look at the wide choice of fitness classes and gym training regimes. There has to be something in there that will suit you.

We can’t make legs longer or bodies taller, but one thing we can reduce is belly fat. This is associated with higher disease risk, so watch that waist!

BE SOCIABLE

Having fun is very important to good health, so make the effort to catch up with friends. Whether it is a big group or just one to one, socialisation with people that make you happy is a guaranteed stress buster.

LOOK AFTER YOUR DIET

Food is fuel, but it should also be fun. Healthy eating doesn’t need to be complicated or expensive, and has every reason to be delicious. If you are in heavier training, you can change your diet to fit and still enjoy good meals.

GET ENOUGH REST

With busy lives, the time we allocate for sleep is often the first to go – a classic case of ‘burning the candle at both ends’. This is a poor choice, as sleep is extremely important for both physical and mental health. Learn to say ‘no’ to too many commitments, and ‘yes’ to a good night’s sleep.

THINK OF YOUR LONG-TERM GOALS

Not happy with where you are in life? Make a plan! Think about where you want to be in ten or twenty years, and how you’d like to get there. Whether it is a career change, a family or a different lifestyle, work towards your happiness. We only get one chance, so make the most of it.

Incorporate these golden rules into your life and you won’t go too far wrong.

I can say yes to all the above except the 'get enough rest'. But that's because I'm too busy getting the other things done!
