KEEP IT UP. THE BENEFITS OF EXERCISE

KEEP IT UP. THE BENEFITS OF EXERCISE

We all know that we need to sit down less and move around more. It is human nature to make excuses – too much work to do, want to catch up with friends, too tired after work and so on.

Blitz those excuses with these reminders about what exercise does for us.

1.MOOD LIFT

Stress and depression are becoming endemic in our society, with long hours and long commutes. Looking after ourselves with exercise is more essential than ever. Working out at any level generates ‘happy chemicals’ in the brain and distracts us from our problems. There is also evidence that exercise helps to maintain brain function.

Even a small amount of exercise will lift mood, so lack of time is not an excuse!

2.IMPROVED POSTURE

All that time staring at the phone or the laptop is doing no good at all for our posture. That means neck strain, shoulder problems and long-term mobility issues. Exercise gets you moving and strengthens the muscles that you need in everyday life. Put the phone down and give your body a break.

3.WEIGHT CONTROL

Health really does start with what we eat, but that doesn’t mean that exercise is not relevant to keep weight down. A good workout burns off those calories and increased muscle mass will make your body more efficient at calorie burning even when you're resting. Time in the gym or in the fresh air is time away from those tempting snacks.

4.STRONGER FOR LONGER

The benefits of exercise go beyond the short-term. Weight-bearing activity keeps bones strong and reduces the chance of fractures and mobility problems later in life. Exercise also reduces the natural loss of muscle mass that occurs as we age. There is no better example of ‘use it or lose it’.

It may sometimes be an effort to drag yourself out for that run or that workout – but it really is worth it. Now and for years to come.
