THE LIFE HACK THAT MIGHT MAKE YOU STICK TO YOUR GYM ROUTINE

THE LIFE HACK THAT MIGHT MAKE YOU STICK TO YOUR GYM ROUTINE

Sometimes we all need to recharge our motivation to keep working out. There are plenty of tips to get you off the sofa and into the gym, but they don’t always work for long. So if you’re in need of some super-strength motivation, look no further!

WHAT’S THE THEORY?

This life hack is called ‘loss aversion’ or ‘burn or burn’ technique. It’s based on the behavioural theory that you’re more motivated if you are going to lose something than if you’re going to gain something.

IS THIS THEORY BACKED UP BY RESEARCH?

Yes! This idea came from a recent American study which found that money can influence your workout motivation. 281 people were divided into four groups: one had no financial incentive, one received $1.40 for every day they achieved their goals of 7,000 daily steps, one was entered into a daily lottery which could earn them cash, and the other received $42 dollars up front but were fined $1.30 for each day they failed to meet their fitness goals.

The result? The people who risked losing $1.40 every day exercised more than 50% more than the control group (the group which was offered no money at all).

WHY DOES THIS LIFE HACK WORK SO WELL?

Clearly, we hate losing money. Psychologists also tell us we feel the psychological pain of loss twice as intensely as the pleasure of a gain.

Secondly, we are great at making excuses. Sure, we might intend to go to the gym, but often find persuasive reasons not to. This is because we fail to properly value rewards we won’t have for a while.

Instead, the ‘loss aversion’ technique works by binding us to a potentially financially-painful contract we have committed to.

HOW CAN I DO THE ‘BURN OR BURN’ TECHNIQUE?

Easy, just follow these points:

  • Choose your challenge – e.g. going to the gym.
  • Schedule the routine – e.g. Mon, Thurs and Sat at 5-6pm.
  • Find a £50 note.
  • Find a lighter.
  • Place a wall calendar somewhere you’ll see it every day and write your routine on it.
  • Tape the £50 note to today’s date.

Now choose: Each day you’re due to workout you either feel the ‘burn’ in the gym or literally burn the money. Instead of watching your money go up in smoke, you are likely to stick to your routine. Good luck – let us know if it works for you!

I would agree with the last writer, Helen, and say that I would need someone else to make me stick to this. But I do agree with the theory of being motivated more by loss.

I don't know if I'd still burn the £50. I would have to involve someone else who would hold me to the commitment, or I'd probably cheat and not burn it!

Interesting theory, might give it a go! Perhaps with a £20 though???
