THREE IMPORTANT REASONS TO BE KIND TO YOUR LIVER

THREE IMPORTANT REASONS TO BE KIND TO YOUR LIVER

Hiding under our ribs and minding its own business, many of us pay no thought to the marvel that is our liver. This vital organ really does deserve some love, for much more than its capability to deal with alcohol.

Here are just three reasons to be kind to your liver.

1.      YOUR LIVER HAS OVER 500 DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS

The liver is the only human organ that can regenerate itself, growing back as much as 75%. It is just as well that the liver is so resilient, because it plays a part in a huge range of life processes.  The liver is a food store, a filter, an infection fighter and much more.

2.      YOUR LIVER IS THE REAL DETOX

This is the function that most of us know about, especially after a heavy night in the pub. Your liver has the job of converting toxic substances (including alcohol) into harmless ones. Overload it and it will struggle.

If your liver is functioning well, there’s absolutely no need for any purported ‘detox’ substances or diets. If your liver isn’t working properly, you need medical help not fad diets.

3.      YOUR LIVER CANNOT BE REPLACED ARTIFICIALLY

Unlike kidneys or even hearts, there is no treatment or artificial replacement for a failing liver. The one and only option is a transplant. While this can be done from a living donor, it is still a very risky procedure with a long waiting time and an even longer recovery.

Liver failure is very serious –so don’t take the regenerative power of this organ for granted.

I’M CONVINCED – WHAT DO I NEED TO DO FOR MY LIVER?

The main liver-care hints are the same as for the rest of your body. Build-up of fat in the liver can cause liver failure even in teetotallers. To reduce the risk, keep your weight under control, eat a healthy diet and take regular exercise. Give it an easier life by reducing alcohol intake.

Look after your liver – it is doing a great deal to look after you!

I would recommend milk thistle as a good way to help detox the liver. Also drinking lots of warm water with lemon juice.

Good to have the reminder that we cannot replace our livers. Just as well it regenerates itself!
