TOP FITNESS TIPS INSPIRED BY OLYMPIANS

The greatest sporting show on earth is about to make its four-yearly bow in Brazil. For the competitors, it is the culmination of years of effort. For the spectators, it is a chance for a colossal party.

The idea of ‘inspiring a generation’ may seem a huge cliché, but here in the real world there are definitely things to be learned from the Olympics. Whatever your level in your sport, take some top tips from the planet’s sporting elite.

RUN LIKE AN OLYMPIAN

Running becomes addictive and runners are very prone to overuse injuries. Don’t risk the disappointment of missing an important event.

With only one chance in four years, Olympic athletes concentrate as hard on their rest and recovery as they do on their running. Follow their example by implementing a taper plan for a distance event.

LIFT LIKE AN OLYMPIAN

Whether it is to tone up or bulk up, weight training has benefits for everyone. At Olympic level, weightlifting gets very serious, with the current clean and jerk record standing at 126kg. Technique, control and posture are vital whatever the load.

 Michael Phelps knows a thing or two about Olympic swimming. His hints include keeping yourself streamlined and positioning your head correctly. The techniques for triathletes translate into pool swimming and sprinting.

It's interesting that the basics are the same for all of us - hard work and perseverance. I'm beyond the time where I might have been Olympic standard, but I also still find it inspiring.

Great tips, thanks. I always get motivated to improve my fitness when the olympics are on. I like the tips from Michael Phelps. Would be good to see more tips from top athletes, they are very motivating.
