With the nights drawing in, outdoor exercise can become less attractive. This means it is a perfect time to step up your gym sessions.

It isn’t always that easy, especially at this time of year with the Christmas juggernaut ever-earlier on the horizon. Nevertheless we all need to keep up the good work.

If your gym enthusiasm (gymthusiasm?) is waning, try these top tips to wake it up again.

Exercise that isn’t fun is much less likely to happen. Personal trainers know that, which is why being cheerful and motivating is a large part of their job. Even if you can’t stretch to a trainer, use their attitude and find yourself a workout, class or sport than you enjoy.  That turns exercise from a chore into a highlight of a day.

Boredom is the enemy of enthusiasm. If your class or workout is feeling ‘same-old-same-old’, take some action before you get demotivated into stopping. There are so many new classes to try and new pieces of gym equipment to ask about. Grab the staff and ask for help with a change.

One of the benefits of a workout buddy is the fact that you have an appointment to keep. Even if it is a solo workout, put it in the diary and regard it as one of the things that has to be done that day. Then you can tick it off with a sense of satisfaction.

Goal setting and workout planning are very important – an aimless workout can do more harm than good. Plans do need to be realistic though, especially if they relate to weight loss. Over-ambitious training plans can also result in injury, so take advice and set yourself achievable goals.

No, not to a post-workout slice of cake – that rather defeats the object! How about some new workout clothes or different tech instead?

Freshen things up, revisit your plans and your gymthusiasm will come right back.

What's made me more enthusiastic is my FitBit. Being able to see my progress and compare it to other people brings out my competitive side, and that's rejuvenated my energy and motivation,. i wold recommend anyone gets one if they're feeling lacking in enthusiasm.

Strangely, I've never got bored of my workouts and I've done the same one for years. I never feel the need to chop and change. i just go to the gym, use the treadmill, machines, and that keeps my enthusiastic enough.

I find that a schedule is the best thing to make sure I stick to my gym workouts. Then I don't have to think about it, whatever the weather is like outside,

I have the opposite problem - the weather is still too nice to go the gym on a weekend day! I think I need to make the effort to go after work when it will be dark anyway.
