TIME TO GET TRAINING FOR THE LONDON MARATHON

The London marathon is easily the most popular running event in the UK, and certainly the most oversubscribed. If you were one of the lucky applicants, now is the time to get on with training. There are only 17 weeks from New Year to marathon day, and they will vanish sooner than you think!

1.MAKE A PLAN

It may feel like a school revision timetable, but such a long training period really does need a written plan. Fortunately the hard work has been done for you. There are dozens of training plans out there, with the rest days and taper all set up for you. The official London Marathon site offers plans for all levels of runners.

2.GET STARTED SLOWLY

Especially if you are a beginner runner, this is one of the all-important top tips for marathons. The last thing you want is to be derailed by injury, so be patient with your build up.

3.MONITOR PROGRESS

Training for the marathon should tone you up nicely. Extra muscle may mean no difference on the scales, but that isn’t necessarily a good measure of fitness.  Record your training runs and times, and also the gym sessions and other workouts. That will let you see how you are really getting on.

4.PLAN THE LOGISTICS

While this can wait until a little nearer the time, all the training will be of no use if you aren’t in the right place with the right kit. Remember that you need to collect your race number no later than the day before. There is an efficient system for transporting your kitbag from start to finish, and for organising thousands of people. Take the time to work out where you need to be and when – it will be a long day but a fun one.

The marathon will rule your life for the new few months – but the achievement will make it all worthwhile.

I'm still working up to my 5k so every respect to all those doing the Marathon. Hard to motivate to get out the door in January but has to be done.

I would recommend doing a half-marathon. It's still a really long way and not so long to train for. I think people are obsessed with the marathon standard and don't give enough credit to those who do lesser amounts.

yes for planning the logistics. It's easy to forget this with all the excitement of actually training for a marathon, but have a think about where you'll be staying overnight and book it soon!!

I did the London Marathon 3 years ago and started training on New Year's Day. Definitely need to start now, and build up. It's a huge challenge but so satisfying.

I have an amazing friend doing this - now I understand why her facebook posts show her upping the training ante. It seems so long away but it really isn't.
